Frost and defrost repair
We thaw the coils safely, then test the defrost heater, thermostat, and timer or board so the frost does not simply grow back next week.
Freezer Repair · Arrington, TN 37014
Soft ice cream is the first warning. We find why your freezer is losing the cold, from frost-choked coils to tired compressors, and fix it before a full thaw costs you a freezer full of food.

A freezer has one job: hold zero degrees. When food starts feeling soft, the cause is usually one of four things: frost insulating the evaporator coils, a fan that stopped moving air, a door seal leaking warm kitchen air in, or a compressor losing its strength. Each leaves different evidence, and we read that evidence before recommending any part.
Arrington households lean on their freezers more than most. Acreage homes around Black Hawk and out Murfreesboro Road stock up on bulk groceries, garden produce, and deer-season game, and many run a chest freezer in the garage or barn as well as the kitchen unit. A slow thaw in a garage unit can go unnoticed for days, which is why we treat freezer calls as urgent.
Book freezer repair if you spot any of the following:
Refrozen food that thawed once is a quality and safety gamble. If you suspect a silent thaw, check for off smells and soft centers before trusting the contents.
We thaw the coils safely, then test the defrost heater, thermostat, and timer or board so the frost does not simply grow back next week.
A dead evaporator fan leaves cold air pooled at the bottom. We replace failed motors and clear blocked vents so temperature evens out.
Warped lids and torn gaskets leak all day long. We fit correct seals and realign doors and chest lids so the cold stays inside.
We meter the compressor, relay, and temperature control, and give you a straight answer on whether the unit earns a major repair.
Freezer repairs are usually more affordable than fridge work because the systems are simpler. Fans, seals, and defrost parts sit in the lower bands; compressor replacement on a basic chest freezer often costs more than the unit is worth, and we will say so.
| Repair | Typical range | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Door gasket or lid seal | $150–$280 | Stops frost and constant running |
| Evaporator fan motor | $190–$360 | Fixes warm-top, cold-bottom cases |
| Defrost heater or thermostat | $200–$380 | For heavy frost buildup |
| Temperature control | $170–$320 | When the unit short-cycles or never stops |
| Compressor | $600–$1,000+ | Rarely wise on basic chest units |
For a premium upright or a built-in freezer column, major repairs can make sense. For a basic garage chest freezer past eight years old with a dead compressor, replacement is usually the honest call, and we will help you think through capacity and placement either way.
Garage and barn freezers are Arrington staples, and garages here are not gentle places: summer heat over 100 degrees inside a closed garage, then January freezes. Units rated for indoor use struggle at both extremes. We check placement and ventilation as part of every garage-freezer call, and we can advise on garage-ready models if yours has reached the end.

Frost comes from moist air getting in or a defrost system that stopped clearing it. Check that the door or lid closes fully first. If frost returns within a week or two, the defrost heater, thermostat, or control likely needs repair.
If food still has ice crystals or stayed at or below 40 degrees, most items can be refrozen or cooked promptly. Anything fully thawed, warm, or off-smelling should go. When in doubt, throw it out.
That is a classic airflow problem: the evaporator fan has failed or vents are blocked by frost or food bags. Cold air sinks and pools instead of circulating. A fan replacement usually fixes it.
Many do, but indoor-rated units struggle when garage temperatures swing from summer heat to winter freezes. Garage-ready models handle the range better. Ventilation space around the unit helps in every case.
Zero degrees Fahrenheit is the target for food safety and quality. A cheap freezer thermometer takes the guesswork out; if the unit cannot hold zero on its coldest setting, it needs diagnosis.
For seals, fans, and controls, usually yes. For a compressor failure on an older basic unit, usually no: replacement often costs less than the repair. We will give you both numbers honestly.
